Defend Freedom and Liberty by Getting Involved in Local Government

All Politics is Local

That's a quote often attributed to the late Thomas P. (Tip) O'Neill, Jr., former Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

For libertarians, that means getting involved in your local government. Running for local office or getting appointed to a board or commision for your local city or county.

Succeeding at the local level is what helps you develop the skills and grassroot support necessary to get elected to a higher office.

Most local municipalities conduct elections for School Board and City Council during municipal elections which will be held on April 7th, 2009.

Most municipal elections are non partisan and provide the best opportunity to win an election and defend the principles of liberty and responsible limited government while you serve in office. Five libertarians currently serve on City Councils, as Mayor and on an elected board for a water district.

Filing for these local offices has already opened and three libertarians have already filed to run for their local City Council. Filing for office closes January 20th for the April 7th election. Contact your local city clerk or school district for more information on filing for office.

Another way to get involved and defend the principles of liberty and responsible limited government is to serve on a local city or county board or commission. This can be a stepping stone for a later run for local elective office. There are currently nine libertarians serving on boards and commissions in Missouri.

To get on a local board or commission call your local city or county and ask what boards and commissions have openings. Often these will be listed on their website or listed on newsletter's you receive in the mail.
