Jefferson Day April 13By Robert Stephens
The action followed up on Eric Harris's resolution of November 17th calling on Libertarian organizations across the state to celebrate "Thomas Jefferson Day", even if in conjunction with Tax Day, April 15. "Since the Republicans have Lincoln Days and the Democrats have Truman Day, we felt we needed a similar day", stated Eric. The day was established in honor of Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States and primary author of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration has been called the "greatest single piece of libertarian writing in the world." "Because Thomas Jefferson is so historically important to what the Missouri Libertarian Party stands for," commented Greg Tlapek, state executive director, "we felt like we should call attention to his birthday and to establish a day where Missouri citizens can celebrate freedom." The State Committee also asked local and county chairs to schedule some activity dealing with Jefferson Day in April. Many county committees have some type of tax protest activity on April 15 and the state committee felt that the publicity resulting from Jefferson Day together with the tax activities might catch the attention of additional prospective Libertarian Party members, as well as mainstream media. Jefferson, born in 1743, died on July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after the birth of our country. See also http://www.geocities.com/gwholiday/Jefferson.html. Had he lived, Jefferson would have turned 260 this year. |
