Letters to the EditorDear Editor: The Missouri Libertarian Party needs to increase its name identification. There are many people who are unaware that the party does exist. Then there are those people who have heard of the Libertarian Party and are ignorant of the party’s platform, ideas, and proposals. Ignorance is no excuse. Also the Missouri Libertarian Party should appeal to voters who are responsible voters. Appealing to those who do not vote because of religious reason, apathy, or lack of interest in politics is a waste of time and energy. For the Missouri Libertarian Party to succeed is to increase its name identification and to get the Libertarian Party message out so everyone can hear it. It is time to end the lack of knowledge that many people have about the Libertarian Party. I want to see what other Libertarian Party members think about increasing party identification and appealing to voters who are responsible voters. Party members need to speak up since it is your party too. Sincerely, William Sollenberger Lockwood, Mo. Dear Editor: The Missouri Libertarian Party should reach out to those voters who are responsible voters. Reaching out to those who do not bother to vote for whatever reason be it religious or outright apathy is a waste of time. Yes there are people who are apathetic, apolitical or lack any interest in politics. My point is to start now to get out the vote and reach out to responsible voters. Sincerely, William Sollenberger Lockwood, Mo. Dear Mr. Sollenberger, Thank you for writing to us. We appreciate all letters we receive. In regard to your suggestions about getting the word out about the Libertarian Party, that is one of our main goals after recruiting candidates and keeping candidates well informed. As far as reaching out to responsible voters goes, it’s my opinion that all voters see themselves as responsible and they want their votes to count towards improving society. Unfortunately most voters accept the nightly news, their city’s major papers and what their elected officials say as what defines, in their minds, the major problems and solutions. Libertarians however tend to treat all news sources as worthy of skepticism, much the same way that reporters are supposed to treat any of their sources. In my experience, I haven’t known our party to actively waste time, energy or money to reach out to people who have no urge, or see no reason to vote. Certainly there is a lot more we could be doing and most of us realize that. We could be sending more letters to the editor’s of major papers and mentioning Libertarian solutions to today’s problems. We could be encouraging everyone we know to join the Libertarian Party and become activists in the party. We need the people who are voting libertarian to give a little (preferably a lot of) extra effort, time, and/or money to the cause. Your interest in the party is commendable and I hope that you are sending letters out to local papers telling them more about the Libertarian Party. Also you may want to check around the Lockwood area to see if there is a local chapter of the Libertarian Party, if not you could get one started. Maybe you might even want to come, or send a representative from your area, to the next Executive Committee meeting in Jefferson City at the Ramada Inn at 1510 Jefferson Street, June 23rd or the one after, July 21st. If you have any idea to increase party membership that you want to see accomplished, feel free to do it. Like I’ve heard before, we’re a do-acracy, and I would never discourage anyone from doing anything that can benefit the cause of Liberty. Thanks again for your letters, Kevin J.
