Yes, You, Y-O-U You, Can WIN a Libertarian Election!

In the August 2002 primary, scores of Libertarians across the state will be swept into office as Libertarian Township Committee reps. Winners will be listed in Missouri's "Blue Book", the Official Manual of the State of Missouri published by the Secretary of State.

All that is required is a short trip to your county clerk's office to file as a Township Committeeman or Committeewoman. The filing period for Township Committee reps extends from February 26 through March 26.

By state statue, every political party may have two township committee representatives, typically one man and one woman. Counties usually have between 10 and 25 townships. In your area, townships may be called wards or divided further into precincts or sub-districts.

Township committee reps form the basis for several other Libertarian Party state organizations:

1.	Township committee reps form county committees. Recent articles in Show Me Freedom listed the counties where the Libertarian Party has organizations, and those which have no organization. The MOLP is seeking to increase the number of active county committees among the 115 counties in the state. The township committee in each county then meets to elect a chair, vice-chair, secretary and treasurer. Active county committees meet monthly.
2.	In addition to county committees, township reps in the 34 state senatorial districts select two representatives to the State Committee. State Committee members meet annually at the MOLP state convention to elect officers and vote on matters that arise in the business meeting. The State Committee is mandated by state statue and has a maximum of 72 members including officers. See the map of the 34 state senatorial districts.
3.	Township committee reps also caucus to select legislative district officers. This includes the 34 state senate districts and 163 state representative districts. Legislative district committees typically would meet only to name a replacement candidate, should a ballot vacancy emerge after the primary but before the general election.
4.	Finally, township committee reps from US Congressional Districts caucus to select two representatives and two alternates to the MOLP Executive Committee. This group meets monthly in Jefferson City and is a creation of the MOLP Bylaws. It has been most active recently in creating projects to grow the party and create success. County committees and legislative district committees are organized on specific dates as prescribed by state statue. See the related article.
