Missouri LP Builds Party Organization in 2002Missouri Libertarians will again be busy this year building its organization from its township committeemen and women to its county organizations to the state committee. In addition, as of this writing there were some vacancies in the MOLP Executive Committee. The filing period for township committee membership is upon us, and the MOLP is encouraging activists to file now. Township Committeemen and women are the backbone of the Party faithful. These representatives are committed to Liberty and participate in local outreach activities, party building and candidate support. If "all politics is local", Township committee members are the nuts and bolts.
The members of each state senatorial district select members to the MOLP State Committee. The State Committee consists of two members from each of Missouri's 34 state senate districts, plus four state officers. The State Committee makeup is mandated by Missouri statute. The main requirement of State Committee membership is attendance at an annual meeting at the state convention. At the August 24, 2001 State Committee meeting and convention, we had 49 of a possible 72 members named. The next State Committee meeting will be held May 18-19, 2002 at the Ramada Inn in Jefferson City (see related article). Finally, the members of each congressional district committee members select Executive Committee representatives. This body is a creation of the MOLP Bylaws. Two members and two alternates are named from each of Missouri's nine US Congressional districts. The four officers of the State Committee are the officers of the Executive Committee bringing the maximum membership to 22 members plus 18 alternates. The MOLP Executive Committee meets monthly at the Jefferson City Ramada Inn typically on the third Sunday of the month. In any case, MOLP members and activists are needed now more than ever to help the Libertarian Party fulfill its mission to move public policy in a libertarian direction, by building a political party that elects Libertarians to public office. |
