Call for Libertarian CandidatesBy Jim Higgins
Filing for candidates for statewide office starts February 26 and ends in March 26. This year of 2002 presents a great opportunity for the Libertarian Party to offer a real contrast to the two other parties and their worn out ideas. Term limits will take effect this year and many entrenched incumbents will have to step aside. The Libertarian party was the only third party in Missouri to retain ballot access in 2000. Other parties will most likely wait until the 2004 presidential year to petition to get on the ballot again. This is a great opportunity for us to show we are the ONLY alternative to the two virtually indistinguishable parties. Jean Carnahan's US Senate seat is up for reelection, as are the Missouri Auditor, all nine congressional seats, the even numbered state senate seats, all 163 Missouri State rep seats plus numerous county offices up for reelection. Age and residency requirements are as follows:
The filing period for the 2002 election begins 8 am Tuesday, February 26th and ends 5 Pm Tuesday March 26th. More than one libertarian can file for any one given office, and they would face off in the primary election on Tuesday August 6th. To file for State and Federal offices you must make a trip to the Secretary of State's Office in the State Capitol at Jefferson City. For details look at the web site at http://sos.mo.gov or call the S.O.S. at (573) 751-4936. For County offices, file with the local County Clerk or County Board of elections. Your filing fee is turned over to the Libertarian Party (in this rare instance the state does not keep it) so you can consider it a contribution. Won't you please step forward and make a stand for liberty and social tolerance? Please make the effort to file and run for office. Frequently the major party candidate will run unopposed. You can prevent that from happening. The effort required is minimal. You can put into it what you want. If you are interested please to me, Jim Higgins, at HigginsLP@aol.com or call at 314-997-0291.
