State Activists Share their Stories

“This year begins my fifth year of writing or editing full-page submissions printed in the weekly advertising newspaper call The Red Page (circulation 16,000) in Columbia”, stated Mitch Moore.  “I write about three-fourths of the time primarily on local issues from a libertarian perspective”, he added.

Mitch Moore

I've addressed issues such as the DARE program, campaign finance reform (also know as the incumbents' protection act), local tax issues, free market economics, and how a libertarian approach benefits blacks, gays, people of different religions.  I've used the forum to hold a number of local feet to the fire.

I've done over 200 columns since January 1998.

Columbia is lucky that the publisher of The Red Page, Mike Dundon, has been willing to donate the space.  He has found it worthwhile to run the submissions for free because some people pick up the paper just to read the column.

Other times, I will reprint something written by local Libertarians or from national folks. The column ends with an offer for a free information packet for the LP and contains the number of the Libertarian Party and its web page address.

Mitch Moore was the Libertarian Party candidate for Attorney General in 1992 and 2000. Mitch has also run for US House in the 9th District 1994 and 1996. He was a candidate for state house in 1998.

Mitch lives in Columbia with wife Sharon and 7-year-old boy Josh. Josh and Mitch recently began taking Tae Kwon Do lessons. Mitch’s instructor turned out to be a black belt by the name of Jim Givens, our former state chair.

Brett Rosen hosts a drive-time call-in talk show from 4 - 6 pm Thursdays on “Radio Free St. Louis”, WGNU 920 AM. An aggravated listener anointed the show with the moniker "head thumping talk radio". The show features analysis and discussion of local, state and national issues from a clearly libertarian perspective. Brett has been a WGNU staple since January 2000.

While the show is definitely a forum to spread libertarian ideas, Brett admits to more sinister motives than simply spreading the gospel of freedom and personal responsibility.

"I started doing talk radio for 3 reasons. The first reason was for self-amusement. The second was to try to make the listeners think a little. Third, if listeners are incapable or unwilling to think, then I would like to make them angry. I have probably accomplished all three”, Brett noted.

In addition to hosting the weekly talk show, Brett maintains a website promoting libertarian communities at http://www.rudehost.com, another idea incited from an aggravated called. The web site includes links to the national Libertarian Party’s articles. It also features a message board where visitors discuss politics, philosophy, and just about anything else.

Paul Kientzy maintains a website, www.poli-sigh.com, that promotes libertarian ideas and opinion. Poli-sigh.com is published monthly with new columns and editorials. Paul accepts and encourages materials from others. Forward questions and commentary to Paul Kientzy by e-mailing paul@poli-sigh.com.
